PROBLEM FOUND

The environmental impact of traditional packaging materials, characterized by overuse of plastic, non-recyclable packaging, excessive packaging and disposable packaging, poses a significant threat to ecosystems. The urgency of finding environmentally friendly solutions is evident, especially in the context of single-use food packaging, which causes great harm to the environment.

In the primary research part, I went to Jaya Grocer located in SS15, Courtyard to observe consumers and products. Observations have found that plastic products account for 90% of consumers’ shopping carts.

Most of the fruits, vegetables, dry food and other products sold in supermarkets are mainly packaged in plastic.

Common disposable individually packaged products include instant noodles, bread, biscuits, candies, etc.

VIA QUESTIONAIRE

Consumer perceptions of product packaging

  • Too much Plastic. Not really focus on environmentally friendly.

  • Excessive packaging, too much packaging for small sample products.

Consumer awareness and acceptance of sustainable development

  • 12.5% Clearly understand the concept of sustainability

  • 18.8% Tend to choose products with sustainable packaging

  • 87.5% Select sustainable packaging depending on the price difference

What is the reason the plastic restriction” plan is not effective?

In Malaysia, many people still consider plastic bags a necessity. It is widely used in grocery stores, food stores, wet markets and hawker stalls, etc. If they charge 20sen for plastic bags, they will lose a lot of customers. 90-100 plastic bags are consumed in a day.

Advantages of plastic bags:

  • Lightweight

  • Cheap price

  • Has excellent barrier properties

  • Allows people to easily process, package and transport food

ENTENDED THINKING

Does ESCAPING PLASTIC packaging really solve the problem?

Are there any suitable SUBSTITUTE MATERIALS?

RISKS of substitute materials?

How to PROMOTE the sustainability of packaging?

BIOPLASTIC EXPERIMENT PROCESS

The required props are a stove, a pot, and a spoon (for stirring). I tried making two kinds of bioplastics, namely:

1. Gelatin-based bioplastics
Materials: Gelatin, water, glycerin

2. Corn starch-based bioplastics
Ingredients: cornstarch, water, glycerin, vinegar

Both bioplastics have their own characteristics, and I think they can both be used.

Comparative analysis:
Gelatin-based bioplastics are softer and more sticky, making them suitable for food packaging and packaging that requires shaping.

Cornstarch-based is flexible and waterproof, suitable for making bags, jewellery, card holders, etc.
